We heared news like this from some Bitcoin wallet services – but now it has arrived in the dogecoin world, too: As the online dogecoin wallet service Doge Vault confirmed, a cyber attack took place on Sunday, 11 May. One day later it was noticed and Doge Vault shut down it’s website. By the cyber attack 280 million of the 400 million dogecoins that the service held for its customers has been stolen. The worth of the stolen dogecoin is equal to £ 75,000!

Doge Vault is a popular online dogecoin wallet and believe that the cyber attacker gained access to the node on which the virtaul machines were stored. So they had the full access to the site’s system. In a statement on Thursday evening, Asad Haider, the creator of Doge Vault said:

We regret to announce that on the 11th of May, attackers compromised the Doge Vault online wallet service resulting in wallet funds being stolen. After salvaging our wallet we have ascertained that around 280 million Dogecoins were taken in the attack, out of a total balance of 400 million kept in our hot wallet. 120 million Dogecoins have been since recovered and transferred to an address under our control. (…) We will make every effort to refund all recovered Dogecoins to users. More information on this will be released along with further information on the attack after we have completed our investigation.

And in an update they say:

Just wanted to give everyone an update on the situation. Data recovery efforts are still on going, we are trying everything we can so that users data can be recovered and also to find the culprits responsible. Information about the attack has been reported to the relevant national law enforcement agencies, who will be launching a criminal investigation into the incident with our full cooperation. All recovered Dogecoins will be reimbursed back to users, we have now started accepting claims to have at least 25% of users account balances returned.
